Food Standards Scotland (FFS) and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) have issued an alert concerning counterfeit bottles of Glen’s Vodka, testing of which has found some to contain a potentially deadly solvent.

The 35cl bottles “were found to contain isopropyl alcohol, so they are unsafe. Isopropyl alcohol is an industrial solvent and is not intended for human consumption.” Drinking the solvent “can quickly lead to alcohol poisoning and in severe cases death” and customers should check for a “laser etched lot code applied to the bottle between the rear label and the base of the bottle”, said FSA in its alert.

The agency advises the public not to consume any Glen’s Vodka that has an unusually strong smell, and to store suspect bottles in a safe place and report it to your local authority for further instruction and advice.
